Does pain or restricted movement keep you from living the life you want? Injuries, too often, take up permanent residence in our bodies. Massage and exercise can help.

Massage is a gentle therapy that can relieve pain and in combination with exercise can help heal certain conditions and prevent their return. In some cases massage can reduce or even eliminate the need for medication or surgery.

Types of Massage:

  • Swedish Massage
  • Hot Stone Massage
  • Deep Tissue Massage
  • Pregnancy/Infant Massage
  • Sports Massage

Swedish Massage:

The Massage Therapist uses their hands with light to moderate pressure using lotion or oil gliding over the skin to increase circulation and relaxation.  An excellent choice for the newbie to massage.

Hot Stone Massage:

The  Massage Therapist uses heated river rocks to glide over the skin to relax and reduce muscular tension. Helps to calm the nervous system resulting in increased relaxation and contentment.

Deep Tissue Massage:

This type of massage is used to relieve muscular tightness, by using deep pressure to a specific area.  Helps to relieve long standing pain and tightness.  Not recommended for first time massage goers.

Pregnancy/Infant Massage:

As your body changes, to accommodate the growing fetus, this puts pressure on specific areas such as your low back, hips, buttocks, legs and feet.  Massage can be soothing and rhythmical to the expected baby inside your womb; help the mother feel more relaxed and relieve the aches in the low back, hips, legs and feet.  And when your little bundle of joy arrives massage really helps babies by promoting better sleep, and ease fussiness.   It also enhances the bonding between mother and baby.

Sports Massage:

Sports massage was designed for athletes, but is useful for anyone with chronic pain, injury or range-of-motion issues.

Sports massage was originally developed to help athletes prepare their bodies for optimal performance, recover after a big event, or function well during training.  Sports massage emphasizes prevention and healing of injuries to the muscles and tendons.

Sports massage is also good for people with injuries, chronic pain or restricted range of motion. The Massage Therapist generally concentrates on a specific problem area.  (Sore neck and shoulders, anyone?)

What Happens During Sports Massage?

Sports massage is a type of Swedish Massage that stimulates circulation of blood and lymph fluids. Some sports massage movements use trigger point therapy to break down adhesions (knots in the muscles) and increase range of motion.

There are four types of sports massages:

* pre-event sports massage -- a short,  stimulating massage 15 - 45 minutes before the event.  It is directed toward the parts of the body that will be involved in the exertion.

* post-event sports massage -- given within an hour or two of the event, to normalize the body's tissues.

* restorative sports massage -- given during training to allow the athelete to train harder and with less injury.

* rehabilitative sports massage -- aimed at alleviating pain due to injury and returning the body to health.
